Her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, obtained a BSc degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Edinburgh. He also received a PhD degree from the University of Tasmania, where he was since 1967 Applied Mathematics lecturer of the Department and on occasion Dean of the Faculty of Science until his retirement in 2003.
Once his daughter married the Crown Prince of Denmark in 2004, he alternated as a guest professor at the University of Aarhus and the University of Copenhagen.
In July 2006 he even was engaged as a "Windmill Ambassador" to promote windmill technology on behalf of Danish commercial interests.
Then in 2013, Jock Dalgleish Donaldson attended together his wife Susan Moody (an accomplished novelist) a service of Holy Communion in St. Alban’s Church WITH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall!!!!! AND they even planted a tree on church grounds.
WOW!
Princess Mary sets really some incredible precedences. It it is not common at all, you know, that parents of a commoner - linked to royalty by marriage - are permitted to take on royal duties.
That's Denmark for you. All-encompassing, and welcoming whoever it is. And hey, why not take advantage of the connections one has.

HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark participated the Elite Research Conference
2014 at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. Mr. Carsten Nielsen - the new Danish
Minister for Higher Education and Science - accompanied her.
So what is
the "Elite Research" and what's going on at the Conference?
Well, "EliteForsk" is and association that is finding, mentoring and honouring some
of Denmark's brightest and most talented researchers. The association is responsible for strengthening the elite of Danish research, and also reinforces the breadth of research - therefore, it is
beneficial to all parts of Danish research.
BTW, the first Elite Research Conference was held in 2006: representatives from the royal family and ministers have since presented EliteForsk prices and EliteForsk travel scholarships each year.
